💰 PRISON COSTS COULD RISE UNDER BUDGET CUTS

If new budget cuts approved by the Legislature’s Joint Finance-Appropriations Committee move forward, state officials warn Idaho could actually spend more on prisons. Cuts to the Commission of Pardons and Parole may delay hearings, keeping more people incarcerated longer.

🧠 HEALTH & WELFARE WARNING

Idaho Health and Welfare leaders warn proposed state budget cuts could disrupt suicide prevention, foster care, and children’s mental health services, saying trimming those programs now could lead to higher costs.

🏛 DEMOCRATS URGE USE OF RESERVE FUNDS

Idaho Democrats made a public plea yesterday to use state reserve funds and avoid additional across-the-board budget cuts, warning the proposed reductions could cause long-term damage to state services.

📚 KINDERGARTEN READINESS RANKING

A new national report shows just 59 percent of Idaho kids ages three to five are kindergarten ready — ranking the state 46th in the nation. Experts encourage parents to read daily and take advantage of local early learning resources.

🎓 GRADUATION RATES HOLD STEADY

Idaho’s graduation rate held steady at 82.3 percent in 2025. Closer to home, Dietrich, Castleford, and Murtaugh High Schools were among 15 schools statewide with a perfect 100 percent graduation rate.

💧 WATER MONITORING CUTS

New statewide budget cuts could mean less water monitoring in Idaho. The Department of Environmental Quality says a five percent reduction will force it to scale back testing for water quality and harmful algal blooms. Director Jess Byrne says the cuts strain legally required monitoring that protects public health.

🥩 GROUND BEEF RECALL

An Idaho company is recalling more than 22 thousand pounds of ground beef over possible E. coli contamination. Kuna-based CS Beef Packers says the products were shipped to distributors in Idaho, Oregon, and California. No illnesses are reported.

⚖ ABORTION BAN LAWSUIT MOVES FORWARD

A federal judge has denied Idaho Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s request to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the state’s near-total abortion ban. The case, brought by a Boise doctor seeking protections for medically necessary abortions, will now move forward to trial.

🐄 ANTHRAX CONFIRMED IN CASSIA COUNTY

The Idaho State Department of Agriculture has confirmed anthrax in a beef herd in Cassia County. No human cases have been reported, and officials say none of the infected cattle entered the food supply.
