Your Daily Briefing – April 30, 2025

🕵️‍♂️ Crime & Courts

  • Prosecutors in the University of Idaho murder case plan to show surveillance video at Bryan Kohberger’s upcoming trial. The footage will reportedly place him near the crime scene during the 13-minute window when four students were killed.
  • ICE officials say they’ve arrested 46-year-old Jorge Peralta-Torres, a previously deported Mexican national, in Twin Falls. He was convicted of lewdness with a child, sexual battery, and aggravated assault, and had a final removal order for an aggravated felony.
  • A Twin Falls man, 45-year-old Juan Larios, was sentenced Monday to five years in prison for felony video voyeurism and six months for custodial interference. He hid children from their mother and sent a harassing explicit photo to a woman. He’s due back in court May 6 for a stalking charge.
  • After nearly two years of legal wrangling, a judge has dismissed the lawsuit between the Bingham County GOP and the Idaho Republican Party. Both sides will pay their own legal fees. The dispute stemmed from a contested 2023 leadership election.

🧑‍✈️ Immigration & Law Enforcement

  • Owyhee County deputies may soon act as federal immigration agents under a revived ICE task force agreement. Sheriff Larry Kendrick signed Idaho’s first such agreement, allowing deputies to interrogate those suspected of being in the U.S. illegally. Civil rights advocates raise concerns about racial profiling and eroding trust in law enforcement.

⚛ Energy & Environment

  • The State of Idaho and the U.S. Department of Energy have agreed to a limited waiver of the 1995 Settlement Agreement, enabling the Idaho National Laboratory to conduct key research on nuclear fuel storage. This supports national energy independence while protecting Idaho’s interests.

📊 Education

While no Magic Valley district met state benchmarks for English or math, some smaller districts exceeded the state average in English. The site lets families compare district performance across the state.

🏈 NCAA & Walk-On Debate

  • Former Boise State kicker Jonah Dalmas criticized a proposed NCAA settlement that would cap roster sizes and require scholarships for all players, potentially eliminating traditional walk-on roles.
