BUDGET DEADLOCK

Republicans on Idaho’s budget committee rejected a funding request yesterday tied to provisions in President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act. The proposal would have funded SNAP changes and new Medicaid requirements, but the vote deadlocked 5–5 in the House.

NAMPA OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING

One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Nampa. Police say officers stopped a vehicle yesterday when a suspect pulled out a handgun. Officers opened fire, injuring the suspect and fatally shooting a passenger who reportedly provided the gun.

VOTER DATA DISPUTE

Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane says the state will not share sensitive personal data from more than one million registered voters with the U.S. Justice Department. McGrane says Idaho law protects that information.

IMMIGRATION BILL BLOCKED

An Idaho House committee has rejected a bill that would have criminalized helping unauthorized immigrants. Lawmakers voted 9–7 to hold the measure in committee after nonprofits, religious groups and law enforcement raised concerns about its impact on charities and legal aid.

BOISE STATE RESTRUCTURING

Boise State University is planning a major restructuring. The school will merge its College of Education with the School of Public Service and phase out the College of Innovation and Design. The move comes as Idaho universities face ongoing budget cuts.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROPOSAL

Rexburg Republican Representative Jon Weber is proposing a new tool to boost affordable housing in Idaho. His bill would let counties grant property tax breaks to nonprofit-owned housing projects.

LIBRARY GOVERNANCE BILL

Nampa Republican Representative Jeff Cornilles is taking another shot at a bill giving city councils the final say over who runs their libraries. The Idaho House passed House Bill 715, requiring majority council approval before trustees can hire or fire a director.

BOIL WATER ADVISORY

The City of Albion has issued a boil-water advisory after a water main break caused a loss of pressure in part of the city’s system. Residents are advised to boil water for at least one minute before using it while crews make repairs.

MICHAEL VAUGHAN CASE

The preliminary hearing for the man charged in the death of five-year-old Michael Vaughan is underway. Prosecutors are presenting witnesses this week to determine if there’s enough evidence to move the case against Stacey Wondra to trial.

SPORTS

CSI HEADED TO NATIONALS

The College of Southern Idaho distance teams are headed to the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Championships this weekend in Topeka, Kansas. Twelve CSI women and four men have qualified in multiple events, including relays, the mile, 800, 1,000 and 3,000 meters. The Eagles open competition Friday with the distance medley relay and the 5,000 meters.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

CSI point guard Ace Reiser has been named Scenic West Player of the Week after leading the Golden Eagles to wins over USU Eastern and top-ranked Snow College. Reiser averaged 17.5 points as CSI captured the regular-season conference title. The Golden Eagles host the Region 18 Tournament this weekend.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

CSI freshman Kyson Giles has been named Scenic West Pitcher of the Week after tossing a near-perfect game against Prairie Baseball Academy. Giles allowed just one hit with no walks and struck out nine in the five-inning win. The Golden Eagles host the Utah State club team for a doubleheader today.

POMERELLE CHANGES HANDS

Pomerelle Mountain Resort is under new ownership, but the local feel isn’t changing. Longtime mountain manager Zach Alexander and his wife Crystal have purchased the resort from the Anderson family. Alexander says keeping the ski area affordable and family-friendly will remain the top priority.

BOISE STATE MEN WIN

Boise State picked up its fourth straight win on senior night, beating San Diego State 86–77. Drew Fielder led the Broncos with a career-high 33 points off the bench as Boise State improved to 19-and-11 on the season.

BOISE STATE WOMEN

Boise State women’s basketball wraps up the regular season tonight at UNLV. The Broncos and Lady Rebels are tied for second place in the Mountain West, and the winner will claim the number two seed heading into the conference tournament. Tipoff is 7:30 Mountain Time.

IDAHO VANDALS WOMEN RANKED

The Idaho Vandals women’s basketball team has climbed to number 16 in the latest Mid-Major Top 25 poll after winning the Big Sky regular-season title. Idaho has won 15 straight games and will enter next week’s conference tournament in Boise as the number one seed.

IDAHO STATE WOMEN

Idaho State women’s basketball wrapped up the regular season with an 85-72 loss to Sacramento State Monday night. The Hornets shot 54 percent from the field and hit 14 three-pointers to pull away. The Bengals now turn their focus to postseason play.
