Police say a Truck driver was killed yesterday morning just east of Declo. At around 11 am the semi was traveling on Yale road when the driver lost control. The 36 year old Paul man died at the scene.

No serious injuries were reported in a two-vehicle accident yesterday morning. One of the two vehicles rolled in the Idaho Joes Parking lot in Twin Falls.

State police say 82 people lost their lives in traffic accidents during the 100 deadliest days on Idaho roads this summer. So far this year, 156 have died. Locally there have been 6 in Twin Falls, 4 in Gooding, 2 in Lincoln County and 2 in Jerome County and 1 in Cassia.

A district court judge in Idaho has denied Attorney General Raúl Labrador’s latest legal challenge to a ballot issue that seeks to end the state’s closed party primary elections and create ranked-choice voting in the general election. Labrador had alleged that volunteer signature gatherers supporting the Idahoans for Open Primaries coalition misled the public and fraudulently obtained the signatures used to qualify the ballot initiative for the election.

Earlier we reported that Twin Falls will be asking for a 7-point 2-million-dollar school levy in November that will in part pay for additional armed security guards. Now Jerome will be going to the patrons to ask for 1.75 million dollars per year for two years. That’s a 500-thousand-dollar increase. The district wants to purchase new and used school buses as the district begins to transition owning the bus system.

Fourth Judicial District Judge Jason Scott has dismissed a post-conviction claim from Thomas Creech, a man who survived an execution attempt and has been on Idaho’s death row since 1983. After surviving an execution attempt earlier this year, Creech’s attorneys claimed that a second attempt by the state to execute him would amount to cruel and unusual punishment.

Idaho health officials say there have been 171 cases of whooping cough reported in the region so far this year. This is a sharp increase compared to 10 cases total for 2023.

SPORTS

It’s College football this weekend. The Boise State bronco football team completes its trek from coast-to-coast to open the 2024 season on Saturday as the Broncos will head to Eugene, Oregon to face the Ducks at Autzen Stadium. Kickoff Saturday is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The College of Southern Idaho Volleyball Team defeated Casper College 3 to 0 yesterday in the Starr Corporation Invitational. CSI, 3-6 overall, takes on third-ranked Northeastern today at 6 p.m.

The Vandal women's soccer team won at home last night, 2-1 against UC San Diego. Idaho's record is now 4-2 overall and 2-0 at home. The Vandals will travel instate this weekend to take on Boise State tomorrow

This morning the spotlight shines on a couple of High School teams. If there is one team in the Great Basin Conference that one can always expect to see towards the top of the standing it is the Minico Spartans. Under the leadership of second-year Head Coach Sherm Blaser, the Spartans do not expect that to change in the 2024 season. In the conference, one can expect to see Minico and Twin Falls battling it out for the top spot in the GBC, just as in previous seasons. However, teams like Canyon Ridge could surprise some with their growth under Coach Juan Alvarado's leadership.

Coming off a seven-win season and an appearance in the 1A Division 1 state playoffs, the Murtaugh Red Devils welcome in new head coach Chad Young and a re-tooled Snake River Conference for the 2024 season. Young replaces Todd Jensen, who accepted a new job in the offseason.

From the scoreboard for local high school games, first for boys soccer, Mountain Home defeated Minico 5 to 0. Twin Falls bested Jerome 1 to 0. Wood River downed Burley 7 to 0. It was Aberdeen over Declo 5 to 0. Gooding took the win over the Sun Valley Community School 2 to 1. For the Girls, Declo for the win over Aberdeen 9 to 1. Middleton for the win over Canyon Ridge 5 to 1. Wood River outlasted Burley 8 to 1.

On tonight’s schedule for high school games, first for football, Hagerman travels to Watersprings, Challis goes to Richfield, Glenns Ferry to Clearwater Valley, Declo to Aberdeen, Filer travels to American Falls and Minico goes to Bishop Kelly. Mountain Home will be on the bus to Buhl, Emmett goes to Burley and Century goes to Canyon Ridge. Butte county goes to Carey and Garden valley will meet up to play Castleford. Rockland will be in Dietrich. Murtaugh travels to play Grace. Snake River travels to Kimberly and Camas County goes to Mackay. Wendell will travel to play Marsing. Raft River will play at Notus. Wood River goes to Ridgeview and Hansen to Rimrock. North Gem travels to Shoshone. Jerome goes to Twin Falls.
