Police Shooting: Victor Perez

Victor Perez, a 17-year-old with severe autism and cerebral palsy, is dead after being declared clinically brain-dead. On April 5, Pocatello police responded to a 911 call about a knife-wielding man. Victor, who was nonverbal and in a mental health crisis, was in his yard with family trying to disarm him of a kitchen knife. Just 12 seconds after arriving, four officers opened fire through a chain-link fence, hitting him nine times. He lost a leg and never regained consciousness. His family removed life support on April 12. An external investigation is underway. The city said rooftop officers deployed during a protest were responding to a credible FBI threat.

Crime & Emergencies

A juvenile driver died in a rollover crash on I-15 near Idaho Falls. The vehicle veered into the median. A passenger was hospitalized.
Caldwell Police are investigating a shooting on East Elgin Street. Shots hit a home with two people inside. No injuries were reported.
In Boise, a fire damaged a fourplex on W. Ellens Ferry Drive. Everyone escaped safely, but a cat was lost. A discarded cigarette caused the fire.
Taco Bell on Blue Lakes in Twin Falls was evacuated due to smoke from a failed HVAC system. No injuries reported.

Education & Student Achievements

Rigby FFA is headed to nationals after winning big at the state FFA Leadership Conference in Twin Falls. The chapter earned a gold, three-star National Chapter Award, and three members received State Star recognition.

Law & Policy

An Idaho judge ruled that abortions are legal if a patient faces a “non-negligible” risk of death. But plaintiffs say the decision lacks clarity, and doctors remain concerned about prosecution under the state’s near-total abortion ban.
About 100 people protested Idaho’s new “Bathroom Bounty Bill” at Boise City Hall. Critics say the law targets the transgender community and violates civil rights.

Traffic & Road Work

The intersection of Heyburn and Martin in Twin Falls will close Thursday at 6 p.m. through Friday for asphalt work.
Carriage Lane will experience lane shifts today for maintenance.

Recreation & Outdoors

Craters of the Moon has reopened part of Loop Road and Lava Flow Campground to vehicles. North Crater Flow Trail and east loop camping are now accessible. Other areas remain open to foot and bike traffic.

Malad crushed Lighthouse Christian 15–1 at the Glenns Ferry Tournament.
Wendell beat Idaho City 12–6.
Challis-Mackay and Soda Springs both defeated Glenns Ferry.
Rigby and Canyon Ridge split games; Canyon hosts Highland Friday.
Wood River swept Jerome; Jerome hosts Kimberly today.
Twin Falls swept Burley, improving to 14–6.

High School Softball

Nampa Christian edged Wendell 5–3; Wendell walked off Grangeville 7–6.
North Fremont beat Glenns Ferry 3–1.
Skyline topped Filer 9–3; Game Two ended in a 3–3 tie.
Kimberly blanked Marsh Valley 16–0.

College & University

CSI Baseball split with Colorado Northwestern. Crew Secrist had six hits; Trey Purser hit a grand slam. CSI hosts USU Eastern Friday and Saturday.
CSI Softball dominated Salt Lake CC, hitting nine home runs. CSI, now 27–14, hosts Snow College.
Boise State Softball lost 18–13 to No. 15 Stanford. Quinn Southerland hit her first homer. The Broncos host San Diego State Thursday.
Boise State Football will move to the west sideline during stadium construction. The spring game is April 19 at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Sun Valley

Sun Valley’s River Run closed the ski season Saturday with live music and sunny skies. Final day on the mountain is April 20. A closing party is set for Warm Springs on April 19.
